Why do many Americans still have a soft spot for the IRA ?

Some Irish-Catholic Americans and American politicians have a soft spot for the IRA. Coupled with the odd fact that Hollywood still finds the "British Bad Guy" a perfectly acceptable trope, it has made for the IRA having a better image than it should in America.
